Designer John Geiger Gets A Second Round For His Patron Tequila Collaboration In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, John Geiger grew up a Pirates baseball fan, and it shows in his work as a streetwear designer, and his wearing of Pirates hat. Geiger recalls, “It started like six years ago. I would wear a Pirates hat every day.” The lower case ‘g’ that dawns almost every pair of John Geiger casual sneakers is a similar font to the lower case g in the 1947 Pittsburgh Pirates logo seen on the hats. Geiger founded the eponymous brand in 2017 and has expanded to clothing and radiates bright colors in premium materials, echoing the array of sneakers and colorways the brand creates. New to that spectrum of sneakers is a collaboration with the hailed tequila brand Patron. Mexican tequila is a staple of Cinco De Mayo, and its iconic taste is recognizable like the John Geiger ‘g’ and the sneaker silhouette that has been famed by streetwear from its earliest renditions. For his second collaboration with the Patron, Geiger brings his signature shoe to his fans with limited-edition John Geiger sneakers, just in time for Cinco De Mayo. John Geiger is one of “The 25 Most Influential People in Sneakers Right Now” according to Complex, and Patron recognizes his craftsmanship in this exclusively made pair. The GF-01 sneaker features a colorway of soft green and a ‘natural’ hue. Inspired by Patron's agave fields in Jalisco, Mexico, the rare materials reflects the agave plant texture. “This is our second go-round. It’s like a family over here now. When we were looking at the GF-1s and the colorways that Patron offered, they wanted it to keep it in green and white. We were in El Salvador sourcing materials that were different and unusual. It was this leather that was embossed. As soon as I [saw] it, I said ‘it looks like an agave plant.’ I kept the material until our first meeting. It reminded me of it,” Geiger explains. The sneaker and apparel designer expands on the new leather application stating, “The materials have never been used for footwear - it’s usually for like bags and other stuff like that. That material comes in one color, so we had to dye those colors - developing it from scratch. We cut the leather, dyed it, then it gets embossed, and it has to get 'lasted.' [The Material] usually comes in a brighter white or brown color.” The embossed leather is sourced from El Salvador and applied to the concept of Mexican tequila, celebrating Cinco De Mayo. The leather color was explored to reflect the green of the Patron brand, and the ‘natural’ white color brings in the summer season as a go-to exclusive pair of kicks. The sneakers will be available, and exclusively accessible for registered fans of Patron and the John Geiger sneaker and apparel brand. “Our first go-round we had t-shirts and socks, and the rollout for that sold out in a couple of minutes. We’re going to release them on Cinco De Mayo at 5 pm, so it’s like ‘5/5’, on johngeigerco.com site.”
